About
the Mathematics Department
Our
Philosophy
We
constantly seek to obtain the very best from each
and every pupil. We do this in an environment which
is dedicated to establishing confidence.
At
Northgate, pupils are motivated to achieve their
utmost and, as is often the case, they surprise
themselves by finding out just how much they really
can do!
We
firmly believe that our staff are our greatest
asset. They are very experienced, knowledgeable
teachers with a record of preparing pupils very
successfully for their KS3 SATs and GCSE examinations. |
|
We
have an excellent range of textbooks and other resources, which support quality
learning at every level. A Computer Suite is adjacent
to the department and ICT lessons form an integral
part of the scheme of work.
In
Years 7, 8, 10 and 11 pupils have the opportunity to
take part in the UK Maths Challenge, which is run by
Leeds University.
Excellent
Results and Achievement
High
expectations are only part of the story. There is a solid
foundation of traditional teaching coupled with thorough
testing, regular homework and continual reviews of each
child’s individual progress.
The
National Curriculum
This
consists of 4 major Attainment Targets namely Number
and Algebra; Shape, Space and Measures; Handling Data;
and Using and Applying. This latter strand permeates all
the others promoting the assimilation of skills in problem
formulation, researching, solving and further exploration.
The tasks involved are not only of an abstract nature but
are also based on real life.
A
Pupil’s Route through Northgate
Key
Stage 3. Years 7, 8 and 9
The
National Numeracy Framework is used and developed through
Years 7, 8 and 9 and the department strives to achieve
a high standard of numeracy for all pupils. This year interactive whiteboards have been introduced into the department, complementing existing resources.
A wide variety of topic books are also used throughout
KS3. The topic books consist of carefully graded examples
allowing pupils of all abilities to realise their potential.
Key
Stage 4 Years 10 & 11
The
two year examination course is accommodated through the
use of 'GCSE Mathematics,' an examination board approved text, at the two levels of examination entry: Higher,
and Foundation.
Each pupil receives a CD-ROM with an electronic copy of the book and interactive personal tutor. Additionally pupils have a dedicated textbook for homework and revision, kept at home.
A
Scientific calculator is essential for use in the examination
courses.
We
believe that the friendly and helpful atmosphere we establish
with our pupils is extended beyond the school and you
are most welcome to discuss your child’s
progress at Northgate at any time.
