Valuing Governors

Earlier this term Norfolk County Council held a workshop for those of its employees who are also school governors. The venue was the fabulous Dragons Hall in Norwich, and we were plied with soft drinks and refreshments all afternoon - a real treat!

We were split into small groups to discuss the difficulties governors face and explore ways of overcoming them. We began by talking about how and why we had become governors; the highs and lows; the difficulties we faced as a governor, and whether these were greater, if we were employed by Norfolk CC; and finally, what the County could do to support governors in general, and its staff who are governors, in particular.

Most of us had become governors to help children, and schools. We had usually been approached personally by a parent, teacher, head, or another governor, asking if we would stand. We all loved attending school events and celebrations, several mentioned the opening of new facilities. We had all experienced some downsides, several had been involved in some very challenging situations. Helping to resolve such problems was the biggest reason people gave for still being a governor, after very many years. Getting time off work to visit school and attend meetings was a factor for many, even though the Council, in common with many other employers, allows a certain amount of paid time off for public duties. Forward thinking employers appreciate that being a governor develops skills such as team working, negotiation, and understanding of different perspectives. I am sure one of the outcomes of this seminar will be more support for governors, especially those who are employed by the Council.

Governors are the biggest single volunteer force in the country and have the ability to impact on the achievements of every child in state education.
