Humanities and Art Specialist Status

A Specialist Arts and Humanities College

Before joining a school it is most important that pupils and parents feel comfortable with its values and ethos.

In September 2004 we became the first school in the country with the combined specialism of Arts and Humanities. We nominated English (Language and Literature), Art & Design and Drama as three major strengths. In developing these subject strengths even further we are confident that we can continue to raise standards across the whole curriculum.

English is a key subject. The Local Education Authority recognised Northgate’s strength in this area by asking us to become a Leading Literacy School for Norfolk. Raising Literacy Standards will improve access to the curriculum for all pupils, hence improving performance in every curriculum area. We believe that the presentational and performance skills developed through Art & Design and Drama will raise confidence and esteem and improve standards across the whole school.

In summary, we believe that through the development of communication and creative skills, we can ensure that Northgate pupils enjoy learning, achieve highly and enter the adult world with confidence.

At GCSE Northgate High School offers a wide subject choice. The core subjects of English, Maths and Science are compulsory. Whilst we will extend the scope and opportunities offered through our Art & Design and Drama courses, these subjects are not compulsory at GCSE. Pupils choose from a wide range of courses including a range of technology subjects, a range of humanities subjects including History, Geography, Environmental Science and Media Studies, ICT; Music, Physical Education and Modern Foreign Languages. Pupils are able to study one or two languages or none at all, depending on their linguistic ability.

Becoming a Specialist College has made a real difference to Northgate. The extra resources of up to half a million pounds over four years enables us to offer greater opportunities and facilities, both to the pupils and the wider community.

These are very exciting times for Northgate.
We hope that you wish to be a part of them.
